Kicking Off Change: Nathan Holton’s MAN v FAT Football Journey
Category: News, People

Introduction
Q: Nathan, can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got involved in MAN v FAT?
I’ve always been into football and used to play at a fairly high level for teams like Hyde Park, Binstead, and East Cowes in the Wessex League. But since becoming a dad, I put on a fair bit of weight—it’s easy to lose the routine. A few mates were already part of MAN v FAT, and they recommended it. It’s not just a football league—it’s a support system. I’m not great with diets, but this gives you structure and motivation because your team depends on your progress.
Q: For those unfamiliar, what exactly is MAN v FAT?
It’s a nationwide football programme aimed at men who want to lose weight and get active. But it’s more than just football—it’s about community. You weigh in before every match, and your team’s success includes your weight loss performance. They also do other things—like group walks and squash nights. It’s really helped with my motivation and mental health. Everyone’s welcoming and supportive, no matter your size or ability.
Q: You’re now part of the Isle of Wight’s MAN v FAT eleven, playing full-pitch matches on the mainland. How did that team come together, and what’s your involvement?
So each local league usually plays small-sided games on Astroturf, but they’ve now pulled together an 11-a-side team from players across the Isle of Wight leagues—Sandown and Cowes. We now travel to the mainland to take on other MAN v FAT squads in full-pitch matches. It’s an exciting next step, and great to represent the island in a proper match setting again. I’m really enjoying being part of it.
Q: How has Cappagh Browne’s sponsorship made a difference to you and the team?
It’s honestly been a game changer. Cappagh Browne’s support has made it easier for me to take part in mainland matches and stay committed to the programme. It also shows that the company cares about us beyond work—about our health and our lives outside the job. It’s encouraging to feel backed by your employer.
Q: What are you most looking forward to in the competition?
Just being part of it. Meeting other players from across the country, playing at a higher level again, and pushing myself. It’s a great feeling to be part of a team again and to know that we’re doing something good for ourselves while representing our community.
Q: Finally, what would you say to anyone thinking about joining something like MAN v FAT?
Absolutely go for it. If you’ve ever felt self-conscious or put off by the idea of joining a regular football club, this is completely different. No one judges you—it’s all about support and progress. It’s helped me physically and mentally, and I’ve made some proper mates too. You’ve got nothing to lose—except the weight!
At Cappagh Browne, we’re proud to support initiatives that promote health, teamwork, and resilience—on and off the pitch.
We wish Nathan and the MAN v FAT Isle of Wight team the best of luck in their upcoming season.
